For this week, we were prompted to play around with 3D printing. I love 3D printing, and have been meaning to test my figure modeling skills for a bit, so this week was perfect for this.

Before actually getting started with my additive 3D print, here is my 3D scan in Bambu Studio. I decided to try and give scanning one of my transformers another shot.

Now, onto the meat of this week. Because the second season of Fionna and Cake is set to come out October 23rd, I wanted to make something themed to Adventure Time. I decided to try modeling and printing an articulated Fionna doll.

Below are my planning sketches, where I planned out each limb, part, and joint:

After planning, I took my sketches into Rhino to begin modeling. I find Rhino to be much friendlier when it comes to abnormal shapes and forms, so this is why I chose it over SolidWorks.

I modeled each component using combinations of rail sweeps, lofts, sub-d modeling, revolves, and mirror, and boolean operations.

When adding in my joints, rather than going with my original torus joint design, I decided to use ball and socket joints instead. I figured it would offer more range of motion.

Now that the model was done, I exported the full thing as an STL file, and imported it into Bambu Studio. After slicing, I put it on the Bambu A1, and began my print.

While my first printing attempt was quick and there were no glaring issues, I did notice a couple of things. For one, the filament color made it a bit difficult to read the features on Fionna’s face. I also made the model a tad too small, so it was a bit hard to move each articulated joint without running the risk of snapping the model.

For the second attempt, I printed in red filament instead. I also scaled up the model to roughly 6 inches versus 4. This seemed to work much better, and produced a much clearer result.

All that’s left to do is some minor post processing, (removing supports, cleaning out the joints, etc), and my print is done!
