Week 3: Vinyl + Laser Cutting

This week was crazy. I almost didn't finish my project but luckly I pulled through.

I started with the group project. My group worked on making a kerf test, a power/speed test, and a sticker of the letter O.

For the power/speed test, we didn't fill in the squares causing us to only get information for cutting without engraving.

For the kerf test, we found that cardboard fit in the 3.4mm to 3.5mm range.

FIRE STICKER!!!

After the group project, I made a vinyl sticker of my church logo and put it on my water bottle.

After that, I wanted to play around with the laser cutter wanted to see how it would work on a simple box model.

It did not go to plan.

I saw that the peices would keep falling apart so I decided to scrap this design focusing
more on stronger connections for my next cut.

After a lot of thought, I found an idea I wanted to do...Kirby!!

I first planned it out in my notebook.

Then I modeled it and cut it out of cardboard in the IRL Lab at Lincoln Park.

That laser cutter only accepted SVG and not DXF so I convereted my DXF and this is what came out.

It was a mess but it showed me that the peices worked.

The next day I laser cut Kirby from wood and it turned out pretty good.

I did have to force the pieces in with a rubber hammer but thankful it still worked.

In the back you can see sand paper because the feet wouldn't go in the star.
